Esther Bertha Hansen -- Austin

The funeral for Esther Bertha Hansen will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Worlein Funeral Home Chapel in Austin, with the Rev. Kent Otterman officiating. Burial will be in Cedar City Cemetery.

Mrs. Hansen, 94, of Austin, a former area farm homemaker, died Saturday (Sept. 25, 2004) at St. Mark's Lutheran Home in Austin.

Paul R. Hallman -- Austin

AUSTIN -- The funeral for Paul R. Hallman will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Mayer Funeral Home in Austin with the Rev. Bruce Kronen officiating. Burial will be in Cedar City Cemetery with military graveside rites by American Legion Post 91 and VFW Post 1216.

Mr. Hallman 79, of Austin, a retired Hormel Foods Corp. employee, died early Tuesday morning (Aug. 8, 2000) at his home.

Iris Hackensmith

Iris Lorraine Hackensmith, 85, of Austin, died Friday, April 16, 2010 at Our House Senior Living.

Iris was born May 5, 1924 in Austin to Lester and Agnes (Gemmel) Ball. She was a retired employee of Hormel Foods having worked there for many years, and she also worked at the VFW. Iris enjoyed fishing, traveling, dancing and visiting with her family.

Lawrence W. Guild, 80

Lawrence Wayne Guild, 80 of Austin, Minn., died Sunday, March 30, 2014, at Mayo Clinic Health Systems, Austin.

Lawrence was born May 15, 1933, in Austin, the son of Clarence and Esther (Corwin) Guild. He graduated from Austin High School and from Riverland Community College with an associate’s degree. Lawrence served four years in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He married Shirley Johnson on June 14, 1956, in Austin.

Thomas J. Groff — Austin

AUSTIN — A memorial service for Thomas J. Groff will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home in Albert Lea, with the Rev. Ron Barnett officiating.

Mr. Groff, 50, of Conger, Minn., formerly of Austin, died Tuesday (Jan. 16, 2007) at the Albert Lea Good Samaritan Center.

Griffin.

Wille Henry Griffin was born in Cedar City, Mower county, April 22, 1871. He was third son of L. B. and Harriet Griffin and was educated at the Austin public school.

GRIFFIN.

On Tuesday afternoon Oct. 6, in this city of membranous croup Olive B., daughter of Ezra L. Griffin, age 10 years. Interment at Cedar City.

A number of our Cedar City people attended the funeral of the late Mr. Griffin which was held in Austin Saturday afternoon with interment in Cedar City. He was an old pioneer of this vicinity and the family have the sympathy of the entire community.

At her home in Cedar City, early Monday morning, March 30, 1896, Mrs. Harriet A., wife of Lucius B. Griffin, aged 54 years.

LEGION ACCORDS MILITARY HONORS TO DEAD VETERAN

Sounding of "Taps" over the newly made grave at Cedar City cemetery concluded the American legion's services yesterday in honor to Floyd W. Griffin, who died overseas, and whose body has lain in the vault at Oakwood cemetery since it was brought back to Austin last January.

Services under the auspices of the American Legion began at the Soldiers' monument at Oakwood cemetery at four o'clock, with Rev. J. W. McFarlane officiating. The Methodist choir sang.

HOLD WAR HERO'S FUNERAL SUNDAY

Legion Has Charge of Services for F. W. Griffin.

Austin Post, American Legion, will have charge of the funeral services to be held at Oakland cemetery Sunday afternoon at 4:00 o'clock for Private Floyd W. Griffin, World War Veteran, whose body was placed in the vault at Oakland in January.

Rev. J. W.McFarlane will officiate at the services, which will be held in the open, and members of the Legion will act as pall bearers. The full membership of the Austin Post will be present at the services. Burial will be at the Cedar City cemetery.

--The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Griffin, of this city died early Sunday morning, aged nine months. Funeral services and burial at Cedar City Monday afternoon.

-- Eben L. Merry, an old settler and one of the first to come into the county, died at his home, in this city, yesterday morning, at 7:30 o'clock. He served during the war of the Rebellion, in company C, 4th Minnesota Infantry, Col. Hubbard commanding. He was also a member of McIntyre Post, G. A. R. His age was 74. The funeral services will take place to-morrow, time and place not decided.

Irene Getchell -- Austin

AUSTIN -- Services were conducted at 11 a.m. today at Mayer Funeral Home in Austin for Irene Getchell, 77, a resident of Twin Towers in Austin. Mrs. Getchell died Saturday morning (Dec. 18, 1999) at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester. The Rev. Joe Matt officiated and interment was in Cedar City Cemetery.

Irene Caudill was born Oct. 4, 1922, in Whitesburg, Ky.

She enjoyed receiving greeting cards, playing bingo and cards and traveling. She especially enjoyed Christmas and giving gifts to her loved ones.

Carolyn Isabelle Johansen -- Austin

AUSTIN -- A memorial service for Carolyn Isabelle Johansen will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Worlein Funeral Home Chapel in Austin. Her body was cremated, and interment will be in Cedar City Cemetery in rural Austin at a later date.

Mrs. Johansen, 53, of Austin, died Friday (July 29, 2005) at Austin Medical Center.

MRS. ANDREW GEMMEL.

Mrs. Andrew Gemmel, aged nearly 88 years, died just before midnight, Saturday night, Sept. 4, 1909, of old age. She has had a number of nervous spells during the past few months but nothing serious. Saturday night she called for her son and his wife complaining of difficulty of breathing and in a few minutes expired.

Kenneth A.J. Gemmel -- Austin

AUSTIN -- The funeral for Kenneth A.J. Gemmel will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin with the Rev. James I. Mikkelson officiating. Burial will be in Cedar City Cemetery in rural Austin.

Mr. Gemmel, 85, of 1505 Third Ave. N.W., a retired Hormel Foods Corp. employee, died Saturday (May 10, 1997) at his home.

Irene M. G. Gemmel, 81

Irene May Gladys Clausen Gemmel, age 81, passed away July 1, 2003, in LaVerkin, Utah.

She was born Nov. 9, 1921, to Marie and Rudolph Clausen in Osage, Iowa. She was educated in Iowa and Minnesota and spent most of her life caring for ill people in their homes. Her sister moved her to Utah in 1997 to oversee her care.

Irene and Albert E. Gemmel were united in marriage Nov. 8, 1959, and lived in Austin.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband in 1988; a sister, Jeri; and a brother, Jerome Clausen.

Edythe P. Gemmel, 100

Edythe P. Gemmel, 100, of Austin, formerly of San Diego, Calif., died Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at Austin Medical Center.

AUSTIN -- A graveside service for Edythe P. Gemmel will be at 10 a.m. April 5 in Cedar City Cemetery in Austin, with the Rev. Patricia M. Toschak officiating.

Miss Gemmel, 100, of Austin, a retired civilian employee of the Navy, died Wednesday (March 26, 2003) at Austin Medical Center.

ARTHUR ALBERT GEMMEL.

Another of Mower County's good citizens and pioneers has passed away. Arthur Albert Gemmel died Tuesday morning at 6 o'clock at his home at Cedar City, six miles southwest of Austin. Mr. Gemmel has been in poor health for some time past, but was sick only two hours before his death which was caused from a partial stroke and heart failure. He was conscious to the last and bade his family good bye.

GEMMEL.

At his home near Cedar City, of Brights disease, Friday, Dec. 16, 1898, Andrew Gemmel aged 79 years.

He was born in Paisley, Scotland, Oct. 31, 1819. He came with his father's family to Montreal where he as married March 8, 1845, to Miss Phebe Phelps. They came to Austin township in 1857, and have since lived there.

There were eleven children born to them. Five of them survive, Adnrew Gemmel of Cavour, S. D., Mrs. Jerry Ingalls and Mrs. Charles R. Varco of Austin, Mrs. Eaton Officer and Arthur A. Gemmel of Austin township.

--Died, suddenly, on the 30th of August, 1886, of verulent cholera morbus, in the house of R. W. Palmer, Esq., Haverhill, near Rochester, Olmsted Co., Alexander Edward, son of Andrew and Phebe Gemmel of Austin, aged 39 years and 27 days.

--Died, at Cedar City, on the 20th of March, of dropsy, Agnes Daney, youngest daughter of Andrew and Phebe Gemmel, aged 21 years, 2 months and 13 days. Miss Gemmel was a sister of Mrs. Jerry Ingall.

—OBITUARY.—Mrs. Mary Gekler was born in Germany, Nov. 6th, 1828, and died in the township of Lyle, Sunday, July 26, 1885, about six a. m. She came to this country in 1854, first settling in New York state; from there she removed to Iowa; from there to Cedar City, in Austin township, where she lived for eight years; after which she removed to Lyle where she spent her remaining days.
